Sleep Apnea Treatment
The Apnea Appliance
Dr. Callender Has Over 15 Years Experience Treating Obstructive Sleep Apnea
The Sleep Apnea Appliance is a custom built oral appliance for treatment of mild to moderate sleep apnea. It looks similar to orthodontic retainers and is comfortable, adjustable, and convenient to use. It is recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine as an acceptable alternative to CPAP.
To fit the appliance, we take impressions of the patient´s teeth and models are sent to our lab for fabrication. Once the custom appliance is inserted, it gently pulls the lower jaw and the base of the tongue forward. The tongue is then unable to fall back and block the airway which causes Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Our appliance is fully adjustable and each patient is seen for a series of adjustment visits so that optimum results are possible.
Once the appliance is in use, we often do home pulse oximetry studies to make sure the appliance is set at the correct position and to make sure that the patient’s oxygen level is in the normal range. The appliance is comfortable and most patients adapt readily to wearing the appliance at night while they sleep.
We are happy to contact the patient’s medical insurance in order to obtain clearance from the insurance company. All patients needing the appliance do have to complete a sleep study so we have precise data for a comfortable and accurate fit.
The sleep apnea assessment and treatment is currently available in our Littleton office only and there is no charge for your initial consultation.
